Did you know that all UK bats and their roosts are protected by law? The Wildlife and Countryside Act introduced in 1981, gave legal protection to all bat species and their roosts in England.
Distinct species of bats prefer differing places to roost. The two most usually found species of bat in the UK are the Pipistrelle and Brown Long-Eared Bat. Pipistrelle prefer confined spaces such as under tiles on roofs and hanging spaces. The Brown Long-Eared Bat prefer roof timbers and ridges inside lofts. Heritage Clay Tiles can provide purpose made access points within your roof tiles or ridge tiles. The Bat Tile Set can form part of a mitigation package required by law for existing roosts or as potential access where a roost had not previously been present.

A handmade roof tile will typically cost up to fifty percent more than its machine-made counterpart but will in return offer more shape, texture and colour variation. The benefits of a handmade clay tile are all in the aesthetic and for period properties and those of character there really is no alternative.

A little information about Berkshire
Prehistoric evidence found in Berkshire
There is some considerable evidence of prehistoric settlements on the Berkshire Downs, including the Iron Age Uffington White Horse, which is now in Oxfordshire owing to county boundary movements.
In the Anglo-Saxon period this particular Berkshire region was contested by Mercia and Wessex, and King Alfred the Great was born in Wantage, also now in Oxfordshire. Windsor Castle, which would become the official, and often favoured country residence of the British monarch, was built after the Norman Conquest of 1066.
King Alfred has a clear connection to Berkshire
Alfred the Great was the King of Wessex who successfully defended his kingdom against Viking invasions and is celebrated for his contributions to education, law, and military strategy.
Alfred was born in 849 at Wantage, Berkshire, as the fifth son of King Aethelwulf of Wessex. Despite being the youngest, he eventually became king after the untimely deaths of his brothers. He ascended to the throne in 871 during a perilous period marked by repeated and increasingly brutal Viking raids across Berkshire and the rest of England.
The Berkshire born Kings military achievements
Alfred is best known for his military knowledge and skill, particularly his victory at the Battle of Edington in 878, where he defeated the Viking leader Guthrum. This victory was pivotal, leading to the Treaty of Wedmore, which established a boundary between Anglo-Saxon territory and the Viking-controlled Danelaw. His strategic reforms in military organisation and fortifications helped secure the Wessex area against further aggressive Viking incursions.
Beyond his military success, Alfred was a major and forward-thinking reformer. He emphasised the importance of education and literacy for his people, establishing a court school and promoting the translation of Latin texts into Old English. His legal reforms included a new code of laws that focused on justice and the protection of the vulnerable in society. Alfred's reign also saw the compilation of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a vital historical record. In short, the Berkshire born king went down in history as one of the greatest kings to have ever ruled in England. In fact, he is the only English monarch to be called "the Great." His efforts to unify the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and promote a distinct English identity laid the groundwork for the future of England. His life and reign have been romanticised in various cultural depictions, including literature and television.
Berkshire has been the scene of many notable battles. Aside from Alfred the Great's campaign against the Danes including the battles of Englefield, Ashdown, and Reading. Newbury was the site of English Civil War battles: the First Battle of Newbury, at Wash Common in 1643, and the Second Battle of Newbury, at Speen in 1644. Donnington Castle was reduced to a ruin in the aftermath of the second battle. Another Battle of Reading took place on 9 December 1688. It was the only substantial military action in England during the Glorious Revolution and ended in a decisive victory for forces loyal to William of Orange.
The county of Berkshire has been the site of several brutal and bloody battles, particularly during the First English Civil War, when Reading and Wallingford were besieged two battles took place at Newbury, in 1643 and 1644. The proximity of the east of Berkshire to London led to development from the nineteenth century, when Slough became an industrial centre and Bracknell was designated a new town. Software development and high-tech industry dominate the economy in the east, but the west of Berkshire remains an agricultural region.
