Did you know that all UK bats and their roosts are protected by law? The Wildlife and Countryside Act introduced in 1981, gave legal protection to all bat species and their roosts in England.
Distinct species of bats prefer differing places to roost. The two most usually found species of bat in the UK are the Pipistrelle and Brown Long-Eared Bat. Pipistrelle prefer confined spaces such as under tiles on roofs and hanging spaces. The Brown Long-Eared Bat prefer roof timbers and ridges inside lofts. What is weathering and why is it important?
Weathering simply refers to the natural process by which anything is broken down over time. Anything that is left exposed to the elements for long enough will eventually disappear completely. The speed at which weathering occurs depends on the durability of the item in question. Our conservation roof tiles are incredibly durable building materials, but they are still susceptible to natural weathering, we just gave nature a helping hand so that you can enjoy a gorgeous, natural weathered finish when you choose conservation roof tiles in a weathered finish.
There are three main types of weathering that can affect roof tiles. There is chemical weathering, physical weathering and biological weathering.
Chemical weathering will change the composition of the roof tile, often transforming them when water interacts with various minerals to create different chemical reactions. Chemical weathering is a very gradual and constant process as the minerals of the roof tile adjusts to the surface environment. Eventually, other minerals develop from the original minerals of the roof tile. In this the processes of oxidation and hydrolysis are most important.
Physical weathering is the process that causes the disintegration of materials, just without chemical change. The primary process in physical weathering is abrasion. However, chemical and physical weathering often goes hand in hand. Physical weathering can occur due to adverse temperature, pressure or frost. For example, cracks exploited by physical weathering will increase the surface area exposed to chemical action. Also, the chemical action of minerals in cracks can aid the disintegration process in roof tiles or indeed anything left exposed to the elements. Physical weathering is also called mechanical weathering or disaggregation.
Biological weathering of roof tiles is caused by the activities of living organisms. Instances such as the growth of lichen, moss or the burrowing of invertebrates. Burrowing insects are probably the most common cause of biological weathering. Insects that can burrow away at the sandy texture of the roof tile can speed up the weathering process.

Horse racing events in Berkshire
Berkshire hosts more Group 1 flat horse races than any other county. The world famous Ascot Racecourse is used for thoroughbred horse racing. This celebrated racing course in Berkshire is one of the leading racecourses in the United Kingdom, hosting thirteen of the United Kingdom's thirty-five annual Group 1 races. The Berkshire course has for many years been strongly associated with the British Royal Family, being a mere six miles from Windsor Castle, and owned by the Crown Estate. Many Monarchs and members of the Royal Household have favoured the splendour of the Berkshire castle over other royal residencies.
Ascot today stages twenty-five days of racing over the course of the year, comprising sixteen flat meetings held between May and October. The Royal Meeting, held in June, remains a major draw; the highlight is the Ascot Gold Cup. The most prestigious race is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes run in July. Ascot in Berkshire remains a major horse racing venue to this day.

The Berkshire based Newbury Racecourse is in the civil parish of Greenham, adjoining the town of Newbury. It has courses for flat races and over jumps. It hosts one of Great Britain's thirty-two Group 1 races, the Lockinge Stakes. It also hosts the Ladbrokes Trophy, which is said to be the biggest handicap race of the National Hunt season apart from the Grand National.

Windsor Racecourse, also known as Royal Windsor Racecourse, is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Windsor. It is one of only two figure-of-eight courses in the United Kingdom. The other is at Fontwell Park. It abandoned National Hunt jump racing in December 1998, switching entirely to flat racing.
Lambourn in Berkshire also has an extraordinarily rich history in horse racing, the well-drained, soft grass, open downs, and long flats make the Lambourn Downs ideal for training racehorses. This area of West Berkshire is the largest centre of racehorse training in the United Kingdom after Newmarket in the county of Suffolk and is known as the 'Valley of the Racecourse'.
