Did you know that all UK bats and their roosts are protected by law? The Wildlife and Countryside Act introduced in 1981, gave legal protection to all bat species and their roosts in England.
Distinct species of bats prefer differing places to roost. The two most usually found species of bat in the UK are the Pipistrelle and Brown Long-Eared Bat. Pipistrelle prefer confined spaces such as under tiles on roofs and hanging spaces. The Brown Long-Eared Bat prefer roof timbers and ridges inside lofts. Heritage Clay Tiles can provide purpose made access points within your roof tiles or ridge tiles. The Bat Tile Set can form part of a mitigation package required by law for existing roosts or as potential access where a roost had not previously been present.

Edwardian Roof Tiles
Edwardian roof tiles to bring back that famed architectural style
Edwardian architecture usually leans toward a Neo-Baroque architectural style that was incredibly popular in public buildings throughout the British Empire during the Edwardian era. Architecture that was built up to 1914 is commonly included in the Edwardian style.
Edwardian architecture, including Edwardian roof tiles can also be used to describe various styles in middle-class housing projects.
What is Edwardian architecture?
Edwardian architecture is generally less ornate than high or late Victorian architecture, apart from a subset, which was used for major buildings that were known as Edwardian Baroque architecture. The Edwardian roof tiles were a common feature on all of the buildings of this era.
Edwardian influence in Masonic temples
Edwardian interior floor tiles were extensively used in Masonic buildings. The Edwardian age saw a great upsurge of interest in freemasonry, so it follows that many of the Masonic buildings that survive today are still clad in Edwardian roof tiles as a form of homage to that bygone period.
The British love their history and the Victorian Society tirelessly campaigns to preserve architecture built between 1837 and 1914, and so includes Edwardian as well as Victorian architecture within its remit.
Characteristics of Edwardian architecture
The characteristic features of the Edwardian Baroque style were drawn from two main sources: the architecture of France during the 18th century and that of Sir Christopher Wren in England during the 17th part of the English Baroque. Sir Edwin Lutyens was a major exponent, designing many commercial buildings in what he termed 'the Grand Style' during the later 1910s and 1920s. This period of British architectural history is considered a particularly retrospective one, since it is contemporary with Art Nouveau.
Typical details of Edwardian Baroque architecture include extensive rustication, usually more extreme at ground level, often running into and exaggerating the voussoirs of arched openings; domed corner rooftop pavilions and a central taller tower-like element creating a lively rooftop silhouette; revived Italian Baroque elements such as exaggerated keystones, segmental arched pediments, columns with engaged blocks, attached block-like rustication to window surrounds; colonnades of columns in the Ionic order and domed towers modelled closely on Wren's for the Royal Naval College in Greenwich. However, one thing they all have in common is the gorgeous rustic Edwardian roof tiles that make any of these fine buildings stand out from the crowd.
A little information about Suffolk
The geography of Suffolk
A good deal of Suffolk is low-lying, founded on Pleistocene sand and clays. These rocks are relatively unresistant and the coast is eroding quite rapidly. Coastal defences have been used to protect several towns, including Lowestoft, but several cliff-top houses have sadly been lost to coastal erosion and others are under serious threat of falling into the sea below. The continuing protection of the coastline and the estuaries, including the Blyth, Alde and Deben, has been, and remains, a matter of considerable discussion at local government level.
Lowestoft and Oulton Broad in Suffolk have both been hit repeatedly by flooding over the years.
The coastal strip to the East contains an area of heathland known as "The Sandlings" which runs almost the full length of the coastline. Suffolk is also home to nature reserves, such as the RSPB site at Minsmere, and Trimley Marshes, a wetland under the protection of Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The clay plateau inland, deeply intercut by rivers is often referred to as 'High Suffolk'.
The western part of Suffolk lies on more resistant Cretaceous chalk. This chalk is responsible for a sweeping tract of largely downland landscapes that stretches from Dorset in the south west to Dover in the south east and north through East Anglia to the Yorkshire Wolds. The chalk is less easily eroded so forms the only significant hills in the county. The highest point in Suffolk is Great Wood Hill, with an elevation of 420 feet. It is the highest point of the Newmarket Ridge and is near the villages of Rede and Chedburgh.
The oxlip was voted the County flower of Suffolk in 2002 following a poll by the wild plant conservation charity Plantlife.
