Conservation Roof Tiles

Conservation roof tiles in a red finish

We generally think of red as the colour of a roof tile. In fact, it is the most popular colour when it comes to roof tiles, and even other styles tend to be predominantly based on the red roof tile.

Although our conservation roof tiles are available in a range of distinctive colours, created by using a very fine sand, the conservation roof tiles in red are always a firm favourite with so many of our customers, but why is red such a popular roof tile colour?

Well, often it is down to the natural colour of the local clay that is used. For example, other countries, particularly Mediterranean countries tend to have historically adhered to a red roof tile. Below are just a few reasons for this phenomenon.

Red roof tiles in Italy

The red roofs commonly seen on buildings in Italy are often made from terracotta tiles. This material has been used for centuries due to its durability, heat resistance, and aesthetic appeal.

Roof tiles in many European cities

Roof tiles in European cities are made from local clays and have a red colour due to the chemical composition of the clay. The red colour comes from iron oxide, which gives the roofs their distinctive red hue.

Roof tiles in Turkey

In Turkey, roofs are often red because of the traditional use of wooden structures and red tiles. The red tiles are made from clay and provide a unique aesthetic to the buildings.

Generally speaking, roof tiles are made from clay, which has a naturally red colouring. To achieve a different colour to the finished roof tile, one would have to add an extra pigment to colour the clay differently. This is great for achieving a different or unique look on certain properties, but red remains the most natural colour, which is why we have chosen not to mess with nature in our conservation roof tiles.

Although our conservation roof tiles are red in colour, they are not a deep and gaudy red. They have a natural and pleasing red hue that will complement any roofing project.

A little information about Bedfordshire

Norman Bedfordshire

There appeared to be no organised resistance to William the Conqueror within Bedfordshire following his victory at the battle of Hastings, though the Domesday survey reveals an almost complete substitution of Norman for English landholders.

Bedfordshire suffered very badly in the civil war of King Stephen's reign; the great Roll of the Exchequer of 1165 proves that Bedfordshire receipts had depreciated in value to two-thirds of the assessment for the Danegeld. Again, Bedfordshire was thrown into the First Barons' War when Bedford Castle, seized from the Beauchamp's by Falkes de Breaute one of the royal partisans, was the scene of three protracted sieges before being demolished on the orders of the king in 1224. The Peasants Revolt from 1377-1381 was marked by less violence in Bedfordshire than in neighbouring counties; the Annals of Dunstable make brief mention of a rising in that town and the demand for and granting of a charter.

Bedfordshire under forest law

A large part of Bedfordshire was subject to forest law as a royal forest, until 1191. The forest law was a separate legal system with its own courts and officers. It was the responsibility of these courts to protect and preserve the venison and vert for the King's pleasure. The venison referred to the beasts of the chase.

In 1638 ship money was levied on Bedfordshire, and in the English Civil War that followed, Bedfordshire was one of the foremost in opposing the king. Apparently, Charles I had no visible party or fixed quarter.

The earliest original parliamentary writ that has been discovered was issued in 1290 when two members were returned for the county. In 1295 in addition to the county members, writs are found for two members to represent Bedford borough. Subsequently, until modern times two county and two borough members were returned regularly.
