Did you know that all UK bats and their roosts are protected by law? The Wildlife and Countryside Act introduced in 1981, gave legal protection to all bat species and their roosts in England.
Distinct species of bats prefer differing places to roost. The two most usually found species of bat in the UK are the Pipistrelle and Brown Long-Eared Bat. Pipistrelle prefer confined spaces such as under tiles on roofs and hanging spaces. The Brown Long-Eared Bat prefer roof timbers and ridges inside lofts. Heritage Clay Tiles can provide purpose made access points within your roof tiles or ridge tiles. The Bat Tile Set can form part of a mitigation package required by law for existing roosts or as potential access where a roost had not previously been present.

Conservation Peg Tiles
Are peg tiles used for under a bay windows
Our conservation peg tiles are not typically used directly under bay windows, but they can be used in similar roofing applications. Heritage conservation peg tiles, for example, are a type of roofing material that has been used for centuries in the United Kingdom and are often associated with traditional English buildings. They are made from clay and are specifically designed for use on pitched roofs. While they are not used directly under bay windows, they can be used in similar roofing applications, such as on the main roof of a house or in conservation projects to preserve the historical integrity of a building.
Sometimes, conservation peg tile has been used to significant effect beneath bay windows though, particularly in towns in the Southeast of England. The conservation peg tile is after all, a very versatile tile and one can use them in a wide range of applications.
Getting the right foundations for conservation peg tiles
When considering the use of peg tiles for roofing, it is important to ensure that they are laid correctly to ensure their durability and longevity. Battens and laths are a time-honoured method of ensuring a good foundation for conservation peg tiles and a fantastic way of reducing the possibility of excessive moisture build up beneath the peg tiles. A little information about Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire was recorded in the Domesday Book as Grantbridgeshire, or Grentebrigescire, which was in relation to the river Granta.
The River Granta in Cambridgeshire
The River Granta is the name of two of the four tributaries of the River Cam, although both names are often used synonymously. The Granta starts near the village of Widdington in Essex, flowing north past Audley End House to merge with the other contributary Rhee, which is also commonly called River Cam, a mile south of Grantchester. From source to its confluence with the Rhee it is 25.9 miles in length.
A further tributary, also known as the Granta, runs 10 miles from south of Haverhill to join the larger Granta south of Great Shelford. Another minor tributary is Bourn Brook which has its source near the village of Eltisley, 10 miles west of the Cambridgeshire county town of Cambridge, running east through Caxton, Bourn and Toft to join the Cam at Byrons Pool.
In many maps the river changes its name at the Silver Street Bridge in Cambridge and is called the river Granta above and river Cam below it.
In earlier times even the lower part of the river Cam was also named the Granta, but after the name of the Anglo-Saxon town of Grantebrycge had been modified to Cambridge, the river was then renamed to match.
Grantchester and Granta Park are on the river banks of the river Granta and their names refer to the river itself.
Covering a large part of East Anglia, Cambridgeshire today is the result of several local government unifications. In 1888 when county councils were introduced, separate councils were set up, following the traditional division of Cambridgeshire, for the area in the south around Cambridge, and the liberty of the Isle of Ely.
In 1965, these two administrative counties were merged to form Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely. Under the Local Government Act 1972 this merged with the county to the west, Huntingdon and Peterborough, which had been formed in 1965, by the merger of Huntingdonshire with the Soke of Peterborough. The resulting county was called simply Cambridgeshire.
