Did you know that all UK bats and their roosts are protected by law? The Wildlife and Countryside Act introduced in 1981, gave legal protection to all bat species and their roosts in England.
Distinct species of bats prefer differing places to roost. The two most usually found species of bat in the UK are the Pipistrelle and Brown Long-Eared Bat. Pipistrelle prefer confined spaces such as under tiles on roofs and hanging spaces. The Brown Long-Eared Bat prefer roof timbers and ridges inside lofts. Heritage Clay Tiles can provide purpose made access points within your roof tiles or ridge tiles. The Bat Tile Set can form part of a mitigation package required by law for existing roosts or as potential access where a roost had not previously been present.

Victorian Roof Tiles
Ridge tiles and Victorian roof tiles on Victorian houses
The ridge of a roof in a house from the Victorian period would have had Victorian roof tiles with Terracotta ridge tiles used to great effect. From the start of the Victorian period these were very elaborate but became simpler by about 1900.
The Victorian use of ridge tiles created a beautiful focal point on the roof. Roof finials are antiqued to give an ornamental, aged appearance, and a weather resistant sealant is applied. Even modern uPVC conservatories still make good use of the Victorian inspired patterns you'll see listed below, of which there are many.
The Victorian roof tiles used were beautiful, but the extra attention to detail during this period took Victorian properties to a different level of excellence.

A little information about Berkshire
History of Berkshire
According to a biography of King Alfred, written in 893 AD, Berkshire takes its name from a wood of box trees, which was called Bearroc, being a Celtic word meaning "hilly". This wood, perhaps no longer extant, was west of Frilsham, near Newbury in Berkshire.
Much of the county of Berkshires early history is recorded in the Chronicles of the Abingdon Abbey, which at the time of the survey was second only to the crown in the extent and number of its possessions, such as The Abbey, Sutton Courtenay. The abbot exercised considerable judicial and administrative powers, and his court was endowed with the privileges of the hundred court and freed from liability to interference by the sheriff.
Berkshire and Oxfordshire had a common sheriff until the reign of Elizabeth I, and the shire court was held at Grandpont. The assizes were formerly held at Reading, Abingdon, and Newbury, but by 1911 were held entirely at Reading.
What did the Sheriff of Berkshire actually do?
The High Sheriff of Berkshire historically held quite significant powers, including acting as the Monarchs representative in Berkshire, overseeing law enforcement and taxation.
The Berkshire sheriff also had the authority to raise armies to support the ruling monarch and collect taxes on their behalf. The Berkshire nobleman would also have the power to preside over courts, and deal with traitors.
The role evolved from the King's Reeve to the High Sheriff of Berkshire, who was the monarch's representative in all matters related to the law.
The office of Sheriff of Berkshire is now largely ceremonial, much like it is in any other county, but the High Sheriff remains the King's highest judicial officer in the county of Berkshire, supporting judges and participating in community functions.
This historical context highlights the substantial and varied power and responsibilities associated with the High Sheriff of Berkshire.
